Faculty of Medicine

Hello friends, I am Professor Mustafa Sait Gönen. I have been the dean of Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine for 2 years now. Medical School is an institution that trains physicians. Medicine is a profession as old as human history. Let me briefly talk about the Faculty of Medicine. It is a training area where pre-clinical training is given in the first, second and third grades, internships of all departments are complete in the fourth and fifth grades, and lastly, during the internship period, thanks to the master-apprentice relationship offered here, students gain experience. There are very important courses in the first 1, 2, 3 pre-clinical stages of the Faculty of Medicine, which we call pre-clinical. Anatomy comes first among them. It must be said that anatomy is quite a difficult subject, especially in Cerrahpaşa. However, it will be quite comfortable for the first-year students, as the first year will serve as an orientation year. It is a year when our first-year students are more interested in social activities and social clubs. In the second grade, the program becomes more loaded and it is the year in which anatomy, pathology, microbiology, histology and other courses get harder. The third grade is the year in which clinics predominate and where clinic and pre-clinical subjects meet. The fourth and fifth grades are the years in which internships, clinical practices and exams take place and the year in which they finally become intern doctors. In the sixth year, they gain more experience as interns thanks to their professors and assistants. There are approximately 42 large and small laboratories in Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine. Again, 22 lecture halls are at the service of our students for teaching purposes. Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine offers quite a lot of space in this regard. Many types of devices and equipment is there for the service of patients and the students, to be used in the laboratory. Faculty of Medicine has a different education system compared to other departments. We provide surgery, internal medicine, obstetrics, pediatrics and other minor internships which consist of two-week internships. Our students visit all clinics, practice and take theoretical lessons in all clinics, and finally are subjected to exams and complete their internship period. We want our students to contribute to the field by publishing international articles when they graduate from medical school, with the help of their advisors. Our professors help out the students having that in mind.
At the Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine, our professors have worked in hundreds of national and international organizations. Programmers of these organizations have the status of chairman of scientific committee and chairman of the association. Again, our students take part in many congresses. I can say that especially in the Student Scientific Research Club (ÖBAK), a very large international organization was held last year. ÖBAK has been holding congresses regularly for 15 years every year. There are 5-6 student clubs that are within the body of Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa and hold regular congresses; They also host national and international congresses every year. When their training is completed, they gain the title of general practitioner and can their jobs prospects are one of the highest in the country. However, I should say that none of our candidates should choose the Faculty of Medicine just because employment is guaranteed. The Faculty of Medicine offers a way of life, they should know that it is a profession that requires a lifetime of reading and a lifetime of passion. Apart from that, those who graduated from the faculty has a wide range of work fields. They can take part in scientific studies, in every field related to health. In Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine, it is said that basic sciences offered here are more difficult compared to other medical faculties. However, even if our students face difficulties starting from the first year, we hear that they remember of those times as quite happy times. In this sense, I do not think that those who choose the medical school will face any additional difficulties because they are young people who can work with discipline and are eager to learn. Let me give some advice to people who will choose medical schools. They should know that they are learning about something that they will practice every day of their lives, with passion. There are some professions in which when the work hours are over, you’re done. However, when you become a doctor, you will be involved in such matters for 24 hours of the day. The concept of overtime does not exist in medicine. Because medicine is more than a profession, it is a lifestyle. I recommend that those who believe that they can lead this lifestyle choose the medical school. The accommodation and food expenses of our students who have chosen the Faculty of Medicine in Istanbul University - Cerrahpaşa and made the top 200 are covered by our institution throughout their enrolment. The first year, we give them each a laptop. Apart from this, the Faculty of Medicine in Cerrahpaşa is one of the rare places of Istanbul where there are many dormitories around it and they will not have any accommodation problems. Faculty of Medicine in Cerrahpaşa is a faculty preferred by successful students from all over our country. I also wish success to students who will make their choice this year. I hope they will make the right choices and be happy with the choices they make for a lifetime. I wish all of them success.
